Dan F / Dyscopian
Biography
Dan F (Dan Findlay) has been immersed in very loud music since the turn of the century, with a music production career nearing three decades. His endeavors include running clubs, managing warehouse sound systems, his influential Disuye Records label, developing audio software, promoting events, and DJing whenever time permits.
While Dan F is perhaps best known for his sonically complex breaks & broken beat from his early 2000s vinyl label, Disuye Records, his music is ever-evolving. He explores breaks, tech-house, minimal, dub-techno, industrial, and code-based algorithmic experimental sounds, under numerous aliases: Dyscopian, SMPLR, Red Buddha, Random Source, Sinosine, Hünker Down, TM7, and Whømp.
Dan F enjoys the entire creative process around developing a project, not just the tunes. Born in Canada with British roots, Dan F declares Hong Kong his home. It was in this vibrant Asian city that he found the energy to break free from a traditional career path and fully commit to music.
As a result, Dan F is among the first electronic music artists, following in the footsteps of producers like Technasia, to put Hong Kong on the map for breakbeat and tech-house. He opened and operated underground clubs Yumla (2003–2012) and Midnight & Co. (2013–2015), as well as the labels Disuye Records (breakbeat, early 2000s) and Yumla Records (tech-house/techno, mid-decade), in addition he opened several bars, and a media/video production studio. During “the vinyl years,” Dan F released on key labels like Bedrock Breaks, Sound of Habib, Kilowatt Recordings, Dorigen, Mob Records, En:Vision Records, and Global Underground, consistently earning ‘Sureplayer of the Month’ reviews in DJ Magazine. The often-used reviewer phrase “his best work to date” became a running joke.
Behind the scenes, Dan F mentored dozens of Hong Kong’s young and upcoming DJs and producers, providing them with the space to develop their own style behind the decks at his club, offering endless hours of studio time, and an impressive amount of ghost-production.
Dan F absolutely loves doing remixes. Producing electronic music in Hong Kong in the early 2000s was an isolating experience, so the opportunity to collaborate was always embraced. His remix discography highlights include several tracks for U.N.K.L.E. — “Burn My Shadow,” “Inside,” and “I Need Something Stronger” — released on Lavelle’s Surrender All; remixing the legendary John Tejada side project Bavaria “Everywhere (大少爺 remix)”; and several remixes and collaborations with Berlin techno legend Namito, as well as ex-Haçienda acid-house pioneer Jon Dasilva.
Eager to support Hong Kong’s every evolving music scene, Dan collaborated with local rap stars Lazy Mutha Fucka and alt-artists Josie Ho, Fiona Sit, Eason Chan, Beyond’s Paul Wong, and co-wrote the late Davy Chan’s influential electronic album “Unbreakable” on Warner Music Asia.
After selling his clubs and bars, Dan took a ‘short pause’ to focus on his mental and physical health – a ‘pause’ which has now lasted nearly nine years! During the pandemic, he moved to Portugal and now splits his time between the dusty rural Algarve and cyberpunk Hong Kong, finding the balance ideal.
And with hindsight being 20-20, Dan F finally answered the cries of long suffering fans for who – unable to find vinyl copies of earlier releases – he has remastered his early to mid-2000s back-catalog, releasing anthologies “Volume One” and “Volume Two” on Bandcamp and Spotify, and freely available on YouTube.
Dan F continues to produce a few remixes & releases annually, focusing on evolving the sound with discrete milestones more than churning out endless bangers. His latest remixes include Ettica on Meat Katie’s Lowering The Tone label and Kraymon on RUNE Recordings.
Dan F and the Audiogore team have been in contact for some time, the stars have finally aligned, and we present to you these remixes of “101”!
